Tips on Mediterranean Interior Design For Your Home in 2024

The Mediterranean interior design stems from Greek, Moroccan, Spanish, and Italian origins. Its aesthetic is timeless, warm, and full of character. The design is usually characterized by touches of blue and turquoise, rich carvings, lots of texture, and interesting tile work.

The texture in the walls and the use of wooden and stone materials make the overall look even border on the farmhouse or rustic style. Think of colors and elements that are reminiscent of the sea, and you should have the design theme down pat. Here, we’ll walk you through on how you can create a space that will transport you to these sun-baked locations in the Mediterranean.

Always go with a neutral backdrop

Always start off with a neutral backdrop, as it will allow you to set the stage to play around with various splashes of colours. Pictured here is a very laidback interior with lots of wall art but for us, what stitched this beautiful Mediterranean interior design project together is this muted beige wall that served as a great backdrop for the design elements to shine.

Although the design is dominated by vined plants, wicker hangings, and hanging art; it doesn’t come off as looking crowded or too much because of the blank canvas that the wall provided. You can do the same thing by starting off with the right muted neutral wall colours of your choice. Go bright or go soft and then build it up from there and we promise you, you will never go wrong from there on out.

Bring a whimsy character to the floors

Mediterranean interior design is all about stone and terracotta floors. We took a page out of that playbook by opting for penny tiles in this bathroom – but with a twist. Penny tiles don’t have to be boring or monochromatic at all.

A little bit of whimsy certainly wouldn’t hurt and can reel in a truly vacation vibe by having patterns along with the tiles. Such a design adds dimensionality to the bathroom space but more than that, it brings in a sense of texture and of a life well-travelled.

Don’t be afraid to play around with the design, colour, and texture of the floor tiles. There is much texture and depth in different stone and tile materials and everything is at your fingertips to completely transform your interior.

Add texture to the walls

Textured walls don’t get a lot of merit because they seem so subtle, but that’s exactly what other design themes are missing and where Mediterranean interior design really shines. There is a certain ruggedness to textured walls that reminds you of vacation places in the Mediterranean.

Most of these places are often either carved straight out of solid stone, similar to the vacation spots in Santorini, or are clad in decorative textures all across the walls. As a homage to that, we added some texture in this kitchen’s backsplash.

We wanted a neutral colour palette but also wanted to add some depth and character to the space. This was achieved by adding textured tiles as backsplash. This addition completely changed the look and feel of the kitchen space. You can also get this done by playing around with your stone and tile options as well.

Go with earthy colors

Soft and warm browns or colors that have yellowish undertones are quintessentially Mediterranean so be generous while using them in the interior. The idea is to give your splashes of color a blank canvass to allow them to really take center stage.

For example, in the space pictured below, we had the blues and the greens become the focal point of the space as they’re swathed in the earthy browns of the furniture pieces and the wooden floors. They were given a pastel canvas to shine and how well they did and brought upon the Mediterranean vibes to the space.
